News in Japanese Internet, ”ゆっくり茶番劇(Yukkuri-Chabangeki)”, what is this?

In  this post I will talk about Japanese news that ”ゆっくり茶番劇(Yukkuri-Chabangeki)” is registerd as trademark.

Summary

Vtuber(Vertual-YouTuber:who use avatar with mortion picture technology in YouTube post) registerd "ゆっくり茶番劇(Yukkuri-Chabangeki)" as trademark and she canceld it finaly in Japan.

The trademark deal with "ゆっくり(Yukkuri)". It imitates a characters from the "東方プロジェクト(Touhou-project)"game series .

"東方プロジェクト(Touhou-project)" is a popular game and it has many fan.

But not everyone knows "東方プロジェクト(Touhou-project)". (In addition, the game  is famous in geek or OTAKU.) 

But but, years made the characters meme"ゆっくり(Yukkuri)" in Japanese internet.

"ゆっくり(Yukkuri)" is used in some movie in Youtube.

Interestingly the pepole who don't know "東方プロジェクト(Touhou-project)" and know "ゆっくり(Yukkuri)" is.

This is one of the "ゆっくり(Yukkuri)" illust, "ゆっくり霊夢(Yukkuri-Reimu)".

Her face is disgusting and annoying.

I explain the word ”ゆっくり茶番劇(Yukkri-Chaban-geki)” at first.

The word "ゆっくり茶番劇" is disassembled "ゆっくり(Yukkuri)","茶番(Chaban)","劇(Geki)".

"ゆっくり(Yukkuri)" is illust of character posted above.

But meaning of the word Yukkuri is slow in Japanese.

The reason the character called Yukkuri is the character illust based on ASCII art saying "ゆっくりしていってね(Yukkuri-shite-ittene)" in internet site.

In literal translation, "ゆっくりしていってね(Yukkuri-shite-ittene)" means "please visit slowly".

But considering the context, it means "take it easy" or "take your time" probably.

"茶番(tyaban)" is "tea turn" in literal translation.But it mens farce that has implicitly not worth seeing.

"劇" means "show". Probably the reason Vtuber use the word is Youtube post is like a show.

In Japanese Internet like 2ch(it is like a raddit in japan and now it is 5ch),  ASCII art is used sometime.

Around 2000, when the Internet became widespread in Japan, various ASCII art became popular on 2ch.

”ギコ猫(Giko-neko)”, it is old one Imitated a cat.

He said ”You should die!!”.

But he doesn't have malice. It is like a greeting.

”しぃ(shii)” is cat too. She is cute.(In this ASCII art, she is hiding behind a cardboard)

It was disliked because it was used by a specific individual at first(the act of  claiming an individual on an anonymous bulletin board in internet is disliked), but it soon spread because the cat is cute.

In developing ASCII art culture, ASCII art has become able to express complex thing and it is  natural that ASCII art imitate popular character from  ”東方プロジェクト(Touhou-project)” series. (ASCII art is interested by geek or OTAKU. "東方プロジェクト(Touhou-project)" is interested too.)

Let's talk about "東方プロジェクト(Touhou-project)" here.

The game is a shooting game famous for its difficulty.

Suprisingly, one developer develops all of the games, illustrations, music, scenarios and programings. And they have high quality.(In illustration, better one is. But geek love his illustration me too. I often played the game about 15 years ago.)

And the game series still releas new one.

The game story or character is mainly inspired by history. It needs little study of them and it interests OTAKU heart.

The game has various mode of difficulty. Most difficult mode ”lunatic” grasp game geek heart too.

Seeing other points, beautiful BGM and  background picture is great. My friend said he can't stop falling tears in first playing ”東方風神録(Touhou-Fuujinroku)” third stage. The stage has background imitate beautiful valley in Nagano that actually exists. Fallen autumn maple leaves reminds us what is Autumn in Japan.

I talked about the game express Japan well, but developer respect cultures other than Japan, other game in the series subjects various theme. It is a big attraction

The games fun made many deritative work, book, music, game, and other goods.

I talked fast and let's back main story video and Yukkuri.(”早口で言ってそう(hayakuchi-de-ittesou)” means that you may talked fast and it ridicules geek in Japanese Internet.)

A video site "ニコニコ動画(Nico-Nico-Douga)" is Indispensable for talking about Japanese Internet culture since 2000 .

This site, which was created about half a year behind Youtube, was overwhelmingly more popular than Youtube, which had less content at the time.

Feature of the site is you can comment on the movie, that is one of a reason OTAKU liked it.

Video contributors sought materials that they could freely use for posting. In commentary movie, avator and voice is needed.

So, they discoverd Yukkuri as useful avatar. The picture from ASCII art is published in Internet at Free. And the game has many character, especially famous main character "霊夢(Reimu)" and "魔理沙(Marisa)" speak with unique way and video contributors can draw an attractive conversation.

At voice, free application "SofTalk" has nice voice that's unique and tastefull but not to interfere with watching videos. 

The voice is called "ゆっくり音声(Yukkuri-Onsei)" means voice of Yukkuri after.

There is a reason the post ”Yukkuri” avatar talk about some contents is spread in ”ニコニコ動画(Nico-Nico-Douga)”.

People know ”Yukkuri” imitate character of ”東方Project(Touhou-Project)” at first.(”ニコニコ動画(Nico-Nico-Douga)” is still loved by geek or OTAKU”)

But after video contributer choose YouTube for their appearance, the people who don't know ”東方Project(Touhou-Project)” and know ”ゆっくり(Yukkuri)” were born.

In ”ニコニコ動画(Nico-Nico-Douga)”, Yukkuri is usually used at live game video or original story(after all, it is contens for geek or OTAKU at the time), but in YouTube Yukkuri is used some commentary movie, science, politics, conspiracy theory at last.

I remember transition to YouTube is around 2010.

Over time in 2022, Vtuber registered "ゆっくり茶番劇(Yukkuri-Chabangeki)" that comment some contents as trademark and she canceld it finaly in Japan.

Video Yukkuri appear in is already enough popular to be posted that old man not to be interested to pop culture know Yukkuri as knowledgeable two people in Twitter, and the news called a big responce.

At last, Vtuber canseled the trademark.

But this news provided opportunity to think about copyright of what has become  commonplace.

But, I want to say a phrase.
